Foundation Review Part 5 – Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation Review, Full Analysis + Swatch in 3.5

Heyyyyy Beauties

Urban Decay have a new range of foundation called ‘All Nighter Foundation’ and today I am going to be fully analyzing and reviewing it. As always with foundation posts, I am going to go over main headings including available shades, consistency/coverage/best applied with/shelf life, lasting power/wear test, chemical (formula) analysis, marketing accuracy and an overall review/summary.

Available Shades/Shade Range

There are 24 available shades in the Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation. The shades range from light to tanned to dark colors. I like how Urban Decay has a large shade range that caters to both light, tanned and dark skin.

Consistency/Coverage/Best Applied With/Shelf Life/Amount

📷

The Consistency of the foundation is thick and creamy but still liquid (as you can see in the swatch above) and the Coverage is very high and full. The product is best applied with a Flat Kabuki foundation brush and can also be applied with a Beauty Blender, but because it is so thick and full coverage the Beauty Blender can suck this up whereas the makeup brush doesn’t.

The Shelf Life of the product is 6 months and it comes with 30 ml (1.0 ounces) of product. A shelf life of 6 months is pretty short for a product but since foundation is used mostly everyday, this won’t be a problem for most.

Lasting Power/Wear

In order to test the lasting power and wear of the product, I checked my face in the mirror and described what I saw in 2 hour intervals 4 times, equaling 8-hours of wear.

Wear Test With Time Intervals

📷

Time Applied- 10.49 AM

Thoughts Upon Application- This foundation is for sureeeee full coverage. It only took a little squirt and a half to make the coverage really full. It is thick but it blends out so easily. It leaves the skin looking so nice, even and perfect. I absolutely love the finish and coverage of this foundation.

First Check In- 12.49 PMtwo hours later– The foundation is still fully on and the coverage is high. There is a tiny bit of creasing which is probably because it is thick in consistency but the creasing isn’t bad at all. My skin looks really good and imperfections are covered. After 2 hours, it has worn good.

Second Check In- 2.49 PM- four hours later– After 4 hours, the foundation is still fully on and the coverage is high. There is no more creasing or settling and it looks the same as the last check-up. It still looks so good and I love the finish still.

Third Check In- 4.49 PMsix hours later– There has been no loss of coverage or pigmentation. There is no further settling or creasing than before. It still looks the same as the last check-in and the finish is still really good.

📷

Fourth Check In- 6.49 PMeight hours later– After 8 hours, the foundation is still fully on and there is no coverage lost. It has worn so good and lasted all day. I really love this foundation.

Lasting Power/Wear Conclusion

The Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation passed both my 8-hour wear test and 8-hour lasting power test. The foundation lasts all day without budging and you only need to apply a bit to get full coverage. It does feel slightly cakey but there is no horrible creasing or settling and it wears good. All in all, the Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation is a really good, high coverage foundation.

Chemical (Formula) Analysis

The Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation contains 23 ingredients and the formula is ranked by the Cosmetic Analysis Database as an ‘Average’ formula. The Cosmetic Analysis Database ranks and analyses each ingredient into 5 categories; highly recommended, recommended, average, not recommended and to be avoided, and then returns a formula ranking based on this.

📷

The ‘Average’ ranking of the Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation is a result of 2 highly recommended chemicals, 8 recommended chemicals, 10 average chemicals, 3 not recommended chemicals and no to be avoided chemicals. The fact that there are 2 highly recommended chemicals, 8 recommended chemicals and 10 average chemicals means the formula mainly consists of high quality chemicals.

📷

The 2 highly recommended chemicals are Tocopheryl and Magnesium Sulfate. Tocopheryl (Vitamin E) acts as an antioxidant and skin conditioning agent in the formula and has multiple benefits including preventing infection, promoting wound healing, smoothing the skin, improving skin moisture, maintaining the skin in good condition, providing natural light protection, avoiding rancidity and oxidation and removing small wrinkles, among more. Based on these characteristics, it is rated by the Cosmetic Analysis Database as a Very Good/Highly Recommended chemical to use in cosmetics.

Magnesium Sulfate acts as a bulking and viscosity control chemical in the formula and has benefits such as preventing infection and fighting acne and blemishes by acting as an anti-inflammatory agent.

The 3 Not Recommended chemicals are Isododecane, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer and PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone. Isododecane has some adverse effects including drying out the skin, promoting wrinkle construction, building a waterproof layer, leading to heat build-up and being able to accumulate in the liver, kidneys and lymph nodes. Isododecane contributes to the matte finish of the All Nighter Foundation.

📷

Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer has some adverse effects including clogging and closing up the pores and being difficult to decompose. Although closing and clogging the pores is an adverse effect, it is the basis of how foundation works. PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone has some adverse effects including irritating the skin and making the skin porous thereby possibly allowing the absorption of hazardous material through the skin.

The fact that there is No To Be Avoided chemicals in the formula means that there are no extremely bad chemicals in the formula. Also, as I said, most of the formula contains average and good chemicals so in this case the good outweighs the bad chemicals and the formula is mostly composed of high quality/good ingredients.

Other than that, preservative chemicals used in the formula include Phenoxyethanol, meaning the formula is paraben free.

Marketing vs Chemical Analysis

Is this product marketed properly?

📷

In order to assess the accuracy of marketing, I looked up how Urban Decay markets the product and then made up and set out to answer questions to test the claims. Urban Decay markets this foundation by saying….

“While Naked Skin complexion products are demi-matte, All Nighter Liquid Foundation is completely matte—but never flat (and its oil-free!). We loaded this formula with an insane amount of pigment (about three times as much as Naked Skin Liquid Makeup), so a little goes a long way. There’s no need to build coverage or apply multiple layers. This waterproof, paraben-free formula diffuses light to blur flaws for beautifully perfected skin as it mattifies and absorbs oil to reduce the appearance of shine” . After reading this I made up and answered the following questions

Is the foundation waterproof? Is it Matte?

Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation contains Isododecane, which as I have mentioned in the past, coats the skin in a waterproof barrier. This is bad and good because while it does prevent water from making the foundation rub off, extending the lasting power, it also prevents the skin from breathing and dries it out. Isododecane also contributes to the matte consistency of the foundation, so Urban Decay have marketed the Waterproof and Matte claim correctly.

📷

Is it easy to build the coverage up to full with minimal product?

The All Nighter Foundation is very thick so it doesn’t take much to build up to full coverage at all. You only need 1 pump and at most 2. Urban Decay have marketed this claim properly.

Is the foundation paraben free?

The Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation is paraben free and uses Phenoxyethanol as a preservative chemical, so Urban Decay have marketed the paraben free claim accurately

.All in all, Urban Decay have marketed this foundation properly and each claim is accurate.

Overall Review/Summary of All Nighter Foundation

📷

The Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation is available in 24 shades and has a thick, liquid consistency. The coverage of the foundation is full and it only takes a little bit of product to get full coverage. The foundation is best applied with a flat kabuki brush or beauty blender.

It has a shelf life of 6 months and contains 30 ml (1 ounce) of product. The foundation has a long lasting power and really good wear, it passed both of my 8 hour tests. The formula is ranked as average by the Cosmetic Analysis database and contains 2 highly recommended chemicals, 3 recommended, 10 average, 3 not recommended and no to be avoided chemicals. Urban Decay have marketed this product accurately.

All in all, I really like this foundation by Urban Decay!!! It has really good coverage and lasting power. The only thing I dislike is that it retails for $65.00 AUD and I find that a tad too much, but it is a good foundation

A Few More Pictures of the Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation

Foundations I have Fully Analysed/Reviewed Ranking List

📷

1• Ella Bache Sunguard Foundation SPF 40

2• Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation

3• Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Foundation

4• Milani Perfect 2-in-1 Concealer + Foundation

5• Too Faced Born This Way Foundation

I like the Urban Decay Stay All Night Foundation better than the Milani 2-in-1 Foundation, Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation and the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation, but not better than the Ella Bache Sunguard SPF 40 Foundation. The Urban Decay Stay All Night and Ella Bache Sunguard Foundation have the most coverage and best finishes in my opinion. If I ran out of Ella Bache, I would turn to this foundation.
