Concealer Review Part 5 – Kat Von D Lock It Concealer Crème Review, Full Analysis + Swatches in Ligh

Heyyyyyy Beauties

Kat Von D Beauty has a line of concealer called Lock It Concealer Creme and today I am going to be reviewing and fully analyzing it.

As always with my concealer posts, I will go over main headings including applicator quality, available shades, swatches in the shades I have, consistency and coverage, best applied with, shelf life, amount, wear/lasting power test, chemical (formula) analysis, marketing analysis and an overall review.

📷

Applicator Quality

The Kat Von D Lock It Concealer Cream has a beautiful, doe foot applicator. The doe foot applicator is different than most concealers applicators because it is more pointed rather than circular. It delivers the product so precisely to the face and you can put it where you want it go to so easily. As you can see in the photo below, the applicator is seriously amazing.

Available Shades/Shade Range

The Kat Von D Lock It Concealer comes in 19 shades. These shades range from light, light neutral, medium, tan and dark. The available shade range is pretty good in my opinion, there are enough shades for fair people, light people, medium people, tan people and darker people. There is enough shades there to be able to contour, highlight and cover imperfections for all skin types.

Swatches in Light Neutral 11 and Light Neutral 15

Consistency/Coverage/Best Applied/Blended With

📷

The Consistency of the Kat Von D Lock It Concealer is very creamy and thick, as you can see in the swatches above. I really like the  consistency of the concealer, it is not runny and it’s just a really nice, creamy consistency.

The Coverage of the Lock It Concealer Creme is medium to buildable full. It can be build up to create an absolutely flawless finish and can also be applied lightly for a lighter, more natural finish. As you will see in the lasting power and wear test below, I really do like the finish of this concealer and it gave me nice coverage that lasted throughout the day.

The Kat Von D Lock it Concealer Creme is best blended into the skin with a Beauty Blender. Beauty Blenders are good for concealer blending because they pack the product right into the skin, giving higher coverage.

Shelf Life/Amount

The Shelf Life of the Lock It Concealer is 6 months. Each concealer comes with 6.26 grams (0.22 ounces) of product.

📷

This means you have 6 months to use 6.26 grams of product before it becomes susceptible to rancidity and microorganism growth. The product may last more than 6 months, so do check for signs of rancidity (change in smell, different texture, etc), but the official shelf life of the product is 6 months.

Six months is an okay length of time for a concealer since it is a product that is used everyday and it is easy to use 6.26 grams of concealer in 6 months, but it’s not favourable and I would much rather a longer shelf life of 1 year, but it’s certainly not a big deal. Just to note, the length of time a product lasts comes down to what preservative chemicals are used and in what concentration, which I will examine in the chemical section below.

Lasting Power/Wear Test

In order to test the lasting power and wear of the product, I checked my face in the mirror and described what I saw 4 times in 2 hour intervals, equaling 8-hours of total wear.

Wear Test with Time Intervals

📷

Time Applied- 12.30 PM

Thoughts Upon Application- The applicator in the concealer is amazing and the shape of it makes it so easy to apply the concealer precisely to the areas you want to. It blends out easily and the coverage is medium to full buildable. To get full full coverage, 2 layers is needed. The end finish is really nice and makes the skin look nice. There is no tingling, irritating sensation when the product is setting like some products. Upon application, I am extremely happy with the concealer.

First Check In- 2.30 PMtwo hours later– The concealer has fully stayed on despite it being very muggy and hot where I live. There is minimal creasing and the coverage is still high. It has worn really good after 2 hours.

Second Check In- 4.30 PMfour hours later–  Still full coverage and none has worn off. There is a tiny bit of creasing under the eyes but nothing noticeable. The finish still looks really good after 4 hours of wear.

Third Check In- 6.30 PMsix hours later– The concealer is still fully on after 6 hours and is still full coverage, which is good because today it is hot where I live. There is minimal creasing or settling and the finish still looks good.

Fourth Check In- 8.30 PMeight hours later– The concealer is still full coverage and hasn’t worn off. There is hardly any creasing or settling. The finish is still really nice and after 8 hours, the concealer has worn and lasted really good.

Lasting Power/Wear Conclusion

📷

The Kat Von D Lock It Concealer Creme passed both my 8-hour lasting power test and 8-hour wear test. It has stayed on all day despite the temperature being hot and the coverage stayed pretty much the same all day. After 8 hours, the finish still looks amazing and there is hardly any creasing or settling. All in all, the quality of this concealer is really good.

Passed 8-hour lasting power test? Yes        Passed 8-hour wear test? Yes

Chemical (Formula) Analysis

The Kat Von D Lock It Concealer Creme contains 39 ingredients in the formula and is ranked by the Cosmetic Analysis Database as having an ‘average’ formula. The Cosmetic Analysis Database ranks all individual chemicals in the formula into 5 categories- highly recommended, recommended, average, not recommended and to be avoided- and returns an overall formula ranking based on this.

The ‘Average’ formula reading of the Kat Von D Lock It Concealer is a result of 1 highly recommended chemical, 22 recommended chemicals, 9 average chemicals, 7 not recommended chemicals and 0 to be avoided chemicals. As you can see, the bulk of the formula is made up of recommended chemicals, meaning the formula contains many high quality ingredients.

📷

The Highly Recommended chemical in the formula is Tocopheryl. Tocopheryl (Vitamin E) acts as a skin conditioning and antioxidant chemical in the formula. It has multiple benefits, including preventing infection, promoting wound healing, smoothing the skin, improving skin moisture, keeping the skin in good condition, removing small wrinkles and assisting in avoiding rancidity and damage by oxidation. Due to these benefits of Tocopheryl, it is rated by the database as a highly recommended/very good chemical to use in cosmetics.

The 7 not recommended chemicals in the formula include Disodium EDTA, Hexylene Glycol, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, PEG-2 Soyamine, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Polymethyl Methacrylate and Lauryl PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone.  Most of these not recommended chemicals have skin irritating characteristics (among other bad characteristics) including Lauryl PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, PEG-10 Dimethicone and PEG-2 Soyamine. Hexylene Glycol can cause allergies and kill skin friendly bacteria and Disodium EDTA is not an environmentally friendly ingredient.

Chemicals in the formula that have benefits for the skin include Tocopheryl, Sodium Hyaluronate, Betaine and Aluminium Hydroxide, which have some good characteristics (among more chemicals).

Other than that, preservative chemicals used in the formula include Phenoxyethanol and Potassium Sorbate. This means that the formula is paraben-free.All in all, the Kat Von D Lock It Concealer formula is really good and as I said, contains mostly recommended, good chemicals.

Marketing vs Chemical Analysis

Is this product marketed correctly?

📷

In order to assess the accuracy of marketing, I looked at the description of the concealer to see what claims they use to sell the product and then made up and set out to answers questions in order to assess the accuracy of these claims. Kat Von D markets and describes the concealer by saying……

Lock-It Concealer Crème does everything a traditional concealer does, and then some: it brightens the undereye area, covers blemishes, corrects discoloration, contours and locks in place for hours. The next-level formula goes on smoothly and blends easily for a smooth, even finish. Loaded with complexion-brightening pigments and ultra-nourishing Hydra-Boost Complex™, this formula is crease-proof and hydrating—ideal for the delicate under eye area. The applicator was modeled after an artist’s paintbrush, with a tapered tip for precise corners and a wide base to efficiently coat larger areas. They also list the following benefits;

24-hour wear, Full coverage, Rich and creamy texture, Noncomedogenic, Paraben-free, sulfate-free and phthalate-free , Not tested on animals.

Questions I have after reading marketing

📷

Is the product loaded with hydrating chemicals? What are some hydrating chemicals in the formula?

The formula of the Kat Von D Lock It Concealer contains 12 moisturizing chemicals including Sodium Hyaluronate which holds and retains moisture on the skin, Tocopheryl which improves skin moisture and smooths the skin, Butylene Glycol which holds and retains moisture, Glycerin which makes the skin smoother, Caprylyl Glycol which holds and retains moisture and soothes and softens the skin, Tremella Fuciformis Sporocarp Extract which holds and retains moisture, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Trimethyloxysilicate and Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate which all soften and smooth the skin. Aluminium Hydroxide both holds and retains moisture and softens and smooths the skin, Phytantriol holds and retains moisture and Betaine calms the skin and gives it moisture. This means that the moisturizing chemical claim by Kat Von D Beauty is completely correct because the formula is indeed packed with moisturizing chemicals.

📷

Is the concealer crease proof? Is it full coverage?

As I said in my lasting power and wear test, the wear was extremely good and hardly creased. However, it did crease a little bit, even though it was slight creasing, I wouldn’t call it ‘crease proof’ so I don’t think this claim is correct. The coverage is medium-buildable full and can certainly be built up to full coverage so this claim is correct.

Is the formula paraben free, sulfate free and phthalate free?

The formula is paraben free and uses Potassium Sorbate and Phenoxyethanol as preservative chemicals instead of parabens, so this claim is marketing correctly. There are no sulfate chemicals in the formula so the sulfate free claim is also correct. Additionally, there are no phthalate chemicals so that claim is accurate.

Is the formula noncomedogenic? Does it contain any chemicals that promote comedown construction?

📷

Just to start, a Comedo refers to a clogged pore that builds on the skin and starts to fill with skin debris (keratin) and oil which block hair follicles on the face and eventually turn into blackheads and whiteheads on the skin. To put it short, chemicals that promote comedone construction are essentially responsible for blackhead formation, whitehead formation and other forms of clogged pore formation on the face.

The term ‘noncomedogenic’ refers to chemicals that do not promote comedone construction- some chemicals do promote comedone formation. In the Lock It Concealer formula, I found that there is one chemical that does promote comedone construction, which is Hydrogenated Polyisobutene. This is the only chemical that does this so it might not have too much of an effect but to market the product as ‘noncomedogenic’ when it clearly contains Hydrogenated Polyisobutene which does promote comedone construction doesn’t sit well with me and this claim is not accurate (see below photo naming some characteristics of Hydrogenated Polyisobutene as outlined by the Cosmetic Analysis Database).

Hydrogenated Polyisobutene is ranked by the database as a ‘not recommended/bad’ chemical to use and is the sole chemical that makes the ‘noncomedogenic’ claim inaccurate.

📷

All in all, the majority of marketing claims for the Lock It Concealer are correct, but I did find some inconsistencies with a few claims that are made, particularly the ‘crease proof’ statement and the ‘nonecomedogenic’ claim. Even though the concealer did wear exceptionally well and only creased a little bit, I still wouldn’t call it totally crease proof. Additionally, there was a chemical in the formula that promotes comedone formation, which is inconsistent with the nonecomedogenic claim. Other than that, all other marketing statements are accurate.

Overall Review of Kat Von D Lock It Concealer

📷

The Kat Von D Lock It Concealer Creme has a  beautiful doe foot applicator that is very high quality and is unique from many concealer applicators. It has a flat tip on one side and then is bent on the other and this unique shape delivers product so precisely. There are 19 shades available in the range and the concealer can be used to cover, brighten and contour.

The consistency of the concealer is thick and creamy and the coverage is medium to buildable full. It is best applied with a Beauty Blender to pack product into the skin. The shelf life of the concealer is 6 months, which is a fairly short shelf life, and the concealer contains 6.26 grams (0.22 ounces) of product.

The Lock It concealer passed both my 8-hour lasing power and wear test and lasted throughout the day and wore really good. The formula is ranked by the Cosmetic Analysis Database as an average formula and the marketing is correct for the most part but there ar a few inaccurate claims. All in all, I absolutely love the Kat Von D Lock It Concealer Creme and I totally recommend it!

Concealers I Have Fully Reviewed/Analyzed Ranking List

📷

1• Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

2• Kat Von D Lock It Concealer Creme

3• Urban Decay Naked Weightless Concealer 4• Too Faced Born This Way Concealer

5• LA Girl HD Perfect Concealer

I like the Kat Von D Lock It Concealer Creme better than the Urban Decay Naked Weightless Concealer, Too Faced Born This Way Concealer and LA Girl HD Perfect Concealer but not better than the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer. This is just because the Shape Tape Concealer has slightly better coverage and packaging.
