Pixi X Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse Review + Full Physical, Chemical, Marketing and Price Analysis

Pixi collaborated with Caroline Hirons to create a 2-in-1 double cleansing product and today, I am going to be talking about and fully analysing it.

Pixi Double Cleanse Description/Details

The Pixi X Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse is a 2-in-1 face cleanser that contains a Solid (oil) cleansing product and a Cream (water-based) cleansing product. The Solid Cleanser and the Cream Cleanser both contain 50 ml (1.69 ounces) of product, giving the whole jar a total of 100 ml (3.38 ounces) of product. The cleansers have a shelf life of 12 months and are made in Korea.

The Pixi Double Cleanser costs $42.21 AUD ($31.05 USD) and can be purchased from Pixi Online and Cult Beauty

How/When To Use??

Step 1: Apply a coin size amount of solid cleansing oil onto dry skin. Massage into skin. Remove with moist facecloth or water

Step 2: Double cleanse by following with the application of a coin size amount of cleansing cream onto skin, massaging thoroughly then removing with moist facecloth or water

Use this as the first step in your skincare routine in the PM (night)

I use this in the shower, it’s so much easier than getting yourself wet and messy over a sink. Pixi says to apply the oil cleanser to a dry face, but there is really no difference at all if your face is damp/wet.

Physical Analysis

I am going to go over some physical aspects including texture/consistency, smell and feel/how it works, and then move on to the chemical, marketing and price analysis.

Texture/Consistency

The Consistency of the Solid Oil Cleanser is a hard, solid balm. You can dig into it and it’s not hard to the point you can’t dig in it, but it’s deffo solid. It’s kind of like a soft wax type feel.

The Consistency of the Cream Cleanser is thick type cream.

Smell

Both the Solid Oil Cleanser and Cream Cleanser have a very faint, pleasant smell. The formula has no fragrance in it, so the faint smell that is present is a result of some of the other ingredients. I really like the smell and do prefer faint smelling products. I also like that no fragrance ingredient is added because these can be irritating.

Feel/How it Works

The Pixi Double Cleanser thoroughly cleanses the skin and includes both an Oil Cleanser and Water Based Cleanser, which are the products needed for the Double Cleanse. The Double Cleanse first came about in Korea (10 step routine), and now people from the Western World (including me) are following in their steps.

The Double Cleanse, which is the first step of the routine, involves an Oil and Water-Based Cleansing product. The Oil Cleanser is used first, followed by the Water Based/Foam Cleanser.

The Pixi Double Cleanse combines both of these products into one tub! You get a Solid Oil Cleanser, and a Cream Water-Based Cleanser.

The Solid cleansing oil breaks down and removes dirt, makeup and sunscreen. You scoop a bit out of it, rub it on your face and it spreads around easily. You then rinse your face and the first cleanse is done! Make sure you are thoroughly rinsing it off.

The Cream Cleanser cleanses and conditions the skin and preps it for the next steps in a skincare routine. It makes sure that the face is thoroughly cleansed and nothing if left on. You just get a tiny bit of this on your hands, rub it around and massage it in, and thoroughly wash off with water.

I absolutely love how both an oil cleanser and a water-based cleanser is combined into one product. It makes it so so easy and it’s so much more convenient. I do the Double Cleanse in the shower because it’s much easier this way, so again, having both cleansers in one product is less of a hassle and you don’t have to lug so many products in.

Since there are 2 products with different formulas in the same product, I am going to have to analyse them separately. I will start with the solid cleanser and then move on to the cream cleanser.

Note- I am unsure of the exact concentration levels of any ingredients in the formula as companies are not required to disclose this.

Solid Cleansing Oil (First Step)

The Solid Cleansing Oil formula contains 15 ingredients. These ingredients are all in the base formula and there are no pigment chemicals added. The Solid Cleansing Oil is ranked by the Cosmetic Analysis Database as a ‘Good/Recommended’ formula. The Cosmetic Analysis Database ranks each individual chemical in the formula into 5 categories based on safety and functioning – highly recommended, recommended, average, not recommended and to be avoided- and then returns an overall reading based on this.

The Good/Recommended formula reading is a result of 3 highly recommended ingredients, 8 recommended ingredients, 1 average ingredient and 3 not recommended ingredients.

Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil is a plant based emollient agent that softens and smooths the skin, promotes healing and skin regeneration and protects the skin from the effects of UV light and pollution.

Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil is a plant derived emollient agent that contains palmitate oils, cares for dry skin and softens and smooths the skin.

Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil is a emollient agent that binds moisture, promotes healing and softens and smooths the skin.

The 8 recommended ingredients in the formula include Cetyl Ethylhexonate, Caprylic Triglyceride, Carthamus Tinctorius Oil, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Ethylhexyl Glyceryl Palmitate, Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Camelia Japonica Seed Extract, Olea Europaea Oil,

Cetyl Ethylhexonate, Capric Triglyceride and Carthamus Tinctorius Oil soften and smooth the skin. Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E) helps to protect the skin from damage by external factors, is well taken up by the skin and prevents damage to products by oxidation.

Ethylhexyl Glyceryl Palmitate softens and smooths the skin and keeps it in good condition. Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter and Camelia Japonica Seed Extract maintain the skin in good condition. Olea Europaea Oil softens and smooths the skin and has a regenerative effect.

The 3 Not Recommended ingredients in the formula include PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, PEG-8 Isostearate and Polyethylene.

PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate and PEG-8 Isostearate are irrelevant to the environment, can irritate the skin and can make the skin porous, which can allow hazardous material to be absorbed (note- I have never felt irritated by this product at all). Polyethylene can also irritate the skin.

I think the formula of the Solid Oil Cleanser is pretty damn good. There are so many more beneficial ingredients than not recommended ingredients. The not recommended ingredients are not toxic or carcinogenic and certainly are not the worst but may cause irritation if you have sensitive skin (it’s unlikely though unless your sensitive to PEGs). All in all, I really like the formula of the Solid Cleanser, it thoroughly cleanses the face, feels amazing on the skin and doesn’t irritate me.

Cleansing Cream (Second Step)

The Cleansing Cream contains 33 ingredients and is ranked by the Cosmetic Analysis Database as having a ‘Good/Recommended’ formula. The 2 highly recommended ingredients in the Cleansing Cream are Ascorbic Acid and Allantoin.

Allantoin is a plant derived emollient agent that promotes cell construction, promotes wound healing, softens and smooths the skin, soothes irritation, cares for cracked, raw and strained skin and helps lighten discomfort of the skin and scalp.

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is an Antioxidant agent that helps wound healing, affixes connective tissue, helps cell renewal, protects from free radicals, smoothes the skin, strengthens the immune system and helps to avoid damage to products by oxidation.

Arginine gives the skin moisture and stabilises the pH value of the skin. Xanthan Gum is mostly added to give the product it’s consistency but it also has a skin tightening effect. Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid) holds and retains moisture and also has a skin tightening effect. Camelia Japonica Seed Extract maintains the skin in good condition,

Camelia Sinensis Extract works and protects against free radical damage , produces a feeling of well being on the skin, maintains the skin in good condition and can help protect against UV rays. Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract softens and smooths the skin, provides moisture, heals wounds, protects infection, promotes healing from sunburn and has a cooling effect. Maltodextrin retains moisture and maintains the skin in good condition.

Butylene Glycol holds and retains moisture. Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 moistens the skin, sh-Decapeptide-7, sh-Octapeptide-4 and sh-Oligopeptide-9 maintain the skin in good condition.

The 4 Not Recommended ingredients in the formula include PEG-40 Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Disodium EDTA and Hexylene Glycol.

PEG-40 Stearate and PEG-100 Stearate are emulsifying and surfactant agents that is irrelevant to the environment, can irritate the skin and can make the skin more porous, which can allow the absorption of hazardous materials from the external environment. Disodium EDTA is a viscosity controlling and chelating agent that is irrelevant to the environment. Hexylene Glycol is a solvent, surfactant, emulsifying and skin conditioning agent that can cause allergies and kill skin friendly bacteria.

I think the good ingredients in the Cream Cleanser formula OUTWEIGH the bad by a mile. Just like the Solid Cleanser, there are no toxic or carcinogenic ingredients in the formula and there are so many beneficial, high quality ingredients. All in all, I absolutely love the formula.

Marketing Analysis

Is the product marketed accurately??

In order to assess the accuracy of marketing, I looked up how Pixi describes the product and then made questions that I set out to answer. Both the Oil and Cream product have different marketing claims, so I am going to analyse them separately again.

Solid Cleanser Marketing Analysis

Pixi describes the Solid Cleanser by listing the following claims…..

“Solid cleansing oil easily breaks down and removes dirt, makeup and sunscreen. Vitamin E protects & conditions, Camellia Oil Omega rich nourishes, Evening Primrose Oil heals & moisturizers”

Questions I Have After Reading Marketing

Does the solid cleansing oil easily break down and remove dirt, makeup and sunscreen?

The Solid Cleansing Oil does break down dirt, makeup and sunscreen very easily. It spreads all around the face so easily, picking up any type of debris and muck on the skin. Pixi have certainly marketed this claim accurately.

Is Vitamin E in the formula and does it protect and condition the skin?

Vitamin E is in the formula (Tocopherol Acetate). Tocopherol Acetate is an antioxidant agent that protects the skin from damage by external factors such as free radicals (unstable molecules that are everywhere). Tocopherol Acetate also promotes healing, strengthens the skins barrier, protects the skin from UV rays and conditions and moisturises the skin.

Pixi have accurately marketed the protection and conditioning properties of Vitamin E in the formula.

Is Camellia Oil Omega in the formula and does it nourish the skin?

Camellia Omega Oil is in the formula. Camellia Oil is rich in oleic acid and vitamin A, B, D and E as well as the nourishing Omega-3, 6 and 9. The molecular weight of the oil is a perfect match for the skin, allowing it to absorb quickly and thoroughly. Camellia Oil maintains, protects and nourishes the skin, and is great for dry, damaged and wrinkled skin. It also prevents infection, has healing properties and is an anti-oxidant that prevents aging and protects the skin from free radicals.

Pixi have accurately marketed Camellia Oil as a nourishing ingredient in the formula.

Is Evening Primrose Oil in the formula and does it heal and moisturise the skin?

Evening Primrose Oil is in the formula as Oenothera Biennis Oil (proper chemical name). Evening Primrose Oil is high in essential fatty acids. Vitamin C and Phenylalanine.

Evening Primrose Oil promotes healing and helps to clear up skin conditions such as eczema and dry skin. It softens and smooths the skin and binds moisture, making it a nourishing ingredient. Evening Primrose Oil also has antioxidant properties.

Pixi have accurately marketed Evening Primrose Oil as a healing and moisturising ingredient.

All in all, Pixi have accurately marketed the Solid Oil Cleanser. All ingredients they have mentioned do have the beneficial properties that Pixi says they do and all other claims were correct also.

Cream Cleanser Marketing Analysis

Pixi describes the Cream Cleanser by listing the following claims…..

Luxe cleansing cream cleanses and conditions by massaging on the skin to prep for the next steps in your regimen. Vitamin C promotes collagen & protects, Peptide Complex relaxes lines & plums, Arginine improves cell renewal & elasticity.

Questions I Have After Reading Marketing

Does the cleansing cream cleanse and condition the skin? Does it prep the skin for the next steps in a skincare routine?

The Cleansing Cream does fully cleanse and condition the skin. It is more hydrating then the Oil Cleanser and leaves the skin very smooth and soft. It also does prep for the next steps in the routine because you have to have a fully cleansed face to go to the next step.

Is Vitamin C in the formula and does it promote collagen and protect the skin?

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is in the formula. Vitamin C helps wound healing, helps cell renewal, affixes the skin, strengthens the immune system and smooths the skin. It also has strong antioxidant properties, meaning it protects the skin from external factors that can cause damage.

Vitamin C also produces and promotes Collagen production. It does this because Vitamin C is needed for hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine to bind molecules of Collagen. This has benefits for the skin such as toning and making it stronger.

Pixi have accurately marketed Vitamin C and it’s benefits in the formula.

What ingredients are in the Peptide Complex and do these ingredients relax lines and plump the skin?

The Peptide Complex Pixi mentions includes 4 ingredients including Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, sh-Decapeptide-7, sh-Octapeptide-4 and sh-Oligopeptide-9.

Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 is a peptide compound that reduces wrinkles and fine lines. This ingredient is sometimes refer to as ‘botox in a jar’.

sh-Decapeptide-7 is a skin conditioning agent. It increases lymphatic circulation and cab help prevent puffy undereyes. It also helps the skin when healing, preventing irritation and may be able to regenerate the skin.

sh-Octapeptide-4 does the same thing as Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 and fines wrinkles and fine lines. sh-Oligopeptide-9 also reduces fine lines and wrinkles and promotes collagen construction.

Pixi have accurately marketed the benefits of the Peptide Complex because all of these ingredients have anti-aging effects and fine lines and wrinkles.

Is Arginine in the formula and does it improve cell renewal and elasticity?

Arginine is in the formula. Arginine is an amino acid that has many benefits such as promoting elasticity and having anti-aging effects, speeds up and promotes healing, eases pain and swelling, repairing and rejuvenating the skin, moisturising and improving/promoting cell renewal.

Pixi have accurately marketed Arginine and it’s benefits in the formula.

Overall, Pixi have accurately marketed the Cream Cleanser. All claims and ingredients mentioned do have the beneficial properties that Pixi have claimed that they do.

Price Analysis

Is the pricing accurate?

$41.21 AUD – $31.05 USD

The Pixi Double Cleanser fully cleanses the face and has ingredients in the formula that are really high quality and you do get what you pay for. You get 50 ml of product of each cleanser, and it is conveniently in one tub. You only need a tiny bit of product each time you cleanse, so the cleanser will last you a while before you have to repurchase.

All in all, I think the Pixi Double Cleanse is priced accurately

Overall Thoughts/Conclusion

Overall I absolutely love the Pixi Double Cleanse and will continue to repurchase it when I run out. It is literally sooo convenient to have around, having two products you need to use in one is certainly helpful.

The ingredients in the formula’s are really high quality and have a variety of benefits. Both cleansers work so good and thoroughly cleanse the face. The smell is nice and faint, the packaging is really nice and I just absolutely LOVE this cleanser.

Facial Cleanser I Have Analysed Ranking List

1• Pixi Double Cleanse

2• MAC Green Gel Foam Cleanser

I like the Pixi Double Cleanser better than the MAC Green Gel Cleanser. For one, the Pixi cleanser has both an oil and water-based cleanser all in one, which is super convenient and makes me want to use it over other products because of this. For two, the MAC Green Gel Cleanser has a worse formula than the Pixi Cleanser, with multiple toxic and carcinogenic ingredients. In contrast, the Pixi Cleanser has no toxic or carcinogenic ingredients, and has a tonne of beneficial ingredients. Hands down, the Pixi Double Cleanse is 100% better than the MAC Green Gel Cleanser.
