Tarte Cosmetics have a range of skincare items and today I am going to be talking about the Drink of Water Hydrating Boost Moisturizer.

Note- because I am going to fully analyse this product both chemically, physically and do a marketing and price analysis, this post may get a little long. Also, because it is skincare and not just makeup, I am going to go more in-depth in regards to the formula, ingredients in the formula and marketing, etc.

Tarte Drink of Water Moisturiser Description/Details

The Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Drink of Water Hydrating Boost Moisturizer is a moisturizer by Tarte that comes in a pretty big tub. It contains 50 ml (1.70 ounces) of product, has a shelf life of 6 months, is made in the USA and costs $58.00 AUD ($43.73 USD).

How To Use

1• Apply evenly all over the face and neck after cleansing.

2• For best results, apply twice a day in the morning and at night.

I don’t normally wear this moisturizer of a morning, but I have been using it every single night for multiple weeks. You can do the same as me, or apply it morning and night also.  I just find it to thick for a morning (more on this below).

When you use this product will depend on your skincare routine, but moisturisers should be used at the very end AFTER cleansing, toning and treating. This is because it is the thickest consistency. If you don’t have a multi-step skincare routine, use this after you clean your face.

Physical Analysis

I am going to talk about physical aspects of the moisturiser including texture and consistency, packaging, smell and feel/how it works. I will then move on to the chemical analysis

Texture/Consistency

The Tarte Drink of Water Hydrating Boost Moisturizer has a thick, gel consistency. The thick consistency of the gel means that you don’t need much on your fingers for it to spread far- a little goes a long way which is really good because you won’t run out very quickly, which is a massive bonus for me.  The gel is tinted to a soft blue colour and the fits the water packaging theme.

Packaging

The Tarte Moisturizer packaging is absolutely beautiful. Both the box it comes in and the actual tube has a blue, wavy theme. They tube has multiple shades of blue waves on it, and so does the box. I really like the packaging, it is so tropic and pretty. It’s always a bonus when skincare comes in nice packaging and I am a fan.

Smell

Straight away I noticed a slight, but pleasant smell that smells a lot like something natural/plant derived. Upon analyzing the formula (chemical analysis section below), I found out the smell is Lavender Oil. The smell is very faint which is good because I am not a fan of overpowering smelling skincare products. Overall, I really like the smell (I am a tough critic on this too) and it reminds me of nature.

Feel/How it Works

The Tarte Drink of Water Moisturizer feels so refreshing and soothing on the skin upon application, and I tend to catch myself going ‘ahhh’ after applying it at night. It stays cool, so when it hits the skin it just makes it feel so good, especially after a long day.

On the first application, it did tinge a bit which is normal when trying a new skincare product and I made sure I wrote down whether this changed when I had used it more or if it was an irritating ingredient. Like I thought, it didn’t tingle at all after the first application and my skin got used to it so so quick.

When you apply the moisturizer, it does stay a little bit tacky for a while until it dries. After 10 minutes when the tackiness has been absorbed and the face is dry, the moisturizer leaves the skin feeling super soft and hydrated.  This is just because the consistency is more on the thick side, so it takes a tad longer than lighter products to fully absorb and dry, which isn’t a problem for me at all.

After multiple weeks of use, the moisturiser has not gave me any breakouts or hasn’t reacted badly with my skin, and after every-night use, has made my skin more plump, soft and hydrated.

I find this moisturiser to be more soothing than other ones I have tried because it has such a thick, gel-like consistency and really soothes the face. As I mention below, it also contains skin soothing ingredients in the formula.

I really really like the Tarte Drink of Water Moisturizer, and if I had to use this and this alone forever, I wouldn’t have a problem with that. Since I like to try a variety of moisturizers, not all of them become my favorites and I wouldn’t live of just them, but I could deal with using this all the time because it is really good. My favourite thing about it is that it really soothes the skin, which is amazing after a long day.  All in all, this moisturiser is a winner for me and I recommended trying it.

The only thing that I don’t like is that it has a 6 month shelf life which is pretty short considering how much product you get, but moisturiser is used every-day so you should get full use out of it before the shelf life runs out. It’s important to remember that shelf life of products is just for reference, and the product will most likely last longer. Just make sure you keep checking the smell and texture to see. I find Tarte products always have a fairly short shelf life which probably has something to do with the less harsh preservative chemicals that they use.

Now, let’s move onto the chemical side of things babes!!!

Chemical (Formula) Analysis

The Tarte Drink of Water Hydrating Boost Moisturizer has 34 ingredients in the base formula and 1 ingredient in the pigment list, giving the formula a total of 35 ingredients. The formula is ranked by the Cosmetic Analysis Database as a ‘Good/Recommended’ formula. The Cosmetic Analysis Database ranks all individual ingredients in a formula into 5 categories based on functioning- Highly Recommended, Recommended, Average, Not Recommended and To Be Avoided- and then returns an overall ranking based on this.

The ‘Good/Recommended’ formula ranking of the Tarte Drink of Water Hydrating Boost Moisturizer is a result of 5 Highly Recommended ingredients, 17 Recommended ingredients, 9 Average ingredients, 3 Not Recommended ingredients and NO To Be Avoided ingredients.

Note- I am not sure of the concentration levels of ingredients in the formula, companies are not required to state exactly how much of each ingredient is present in the formula.

The 8 Highly Recommended/Very Good chemicals in the formula include Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Hyaluronic Acid, Phospholipids, Lavender Angustifolia (Lavender Oil) , Sea Salt Extract.

Tocopherol (Vitamin E) is a skin conditioning and antioxidant agent that has many benefits including preventing infection, promoting wound healing, giving the skin moisture, smoothing and softening it as well as maintaining it in good condition, removing small wrinkles and preventing rancidity and damage to products by oxidation.

Hyaluronic Acid is humectant, skin conditioning and moisturizing agent that attracts and draws in water and moisture, making the skin smooth, soft and hydrated. Along with moisturizing the skin, Hyaluronic Acid can also have a skin tightening effect and helps to maintain the skin in good condition.

Phospholipids are naturally derived skin conditioning agents that protect the skin, improve moisture retention and maintain the skin in good condition.

Lavender Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil is a plant derived tonic and masking agent that has cell renewal effects, makes the skin feel healthy and has calming properties. Lavender Oil also masks the scent of chemicals in the formula, and is the chemical responsible for the moisturizers slight lavender smell. Lavender Angustifolia Oil is also an essential oil.

Sea Salt Extract is a skin conditioning agent that promotes healing, tightens the skin and keeps it in good condition.

Other beneficial ingredients in the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Drink of Water Moisturizer include Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Oil, Algae Extract, Helianthus Seed Extract, Cocos Nucifera,  Gardenia Tahitensis Flower Extract, Glycerin, Squalene and Caprylyl Glycol.

Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Oil is a antistingent and tonic agent that prevents infection , has antiseptic properties and makes the skin feel healthy. Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Oil is another essential oil in the formula.

Algae Extract is a plant derived humectant, Tonic and Refreshing agent that draws moisture into the skin and holds and retains it, makes the skin and hair feel fresh and healthy and helps reduce discomfort on the skin or scalp.

Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil is a plant derived emollient, skin conditioning and masking agent that softens and smooths the skin and keeps it in good condition. It is also a masking agent that most likely helps hide any chemical small and could contribute to the overall smell of the moisturizer along with Lavender Oil (discussed above).

Cocos Nucifera is a emollient and solvent agent that smooths and softens the skin, as well as moisturising it. Cocos Nucifera is also used to dissolve other substances in cosmetics. Gardenia Tahitensis Flower Extract is a skin conditioning agent that maintains the skin in good condition.

Squalene is a, emollient, skin conditioning and hair conditioning agent that replenishes the lipids on the top layers of the skin and hair, smooths and softens the skin and maintains it in good condition. Enteromorpha Compressa Extract is an antioxidant and skin protecting agent that helps protect the skin from damage from external factors, which keeps the skin in good condition and may even have anti-aging effects by preventing damage from free radicals.

Glycerin is a humectant and solvent agent that draws moisture into the skin, hydrating it and making it feel smooth. Caprylyl Glycol is an emollient, humectant and hair conditioning agent that also draws moisture into the skin, holds and retains it and makes the skin feel smooth.

The 3 Not Recommended Ingredients are Hexylene Glycol, Disodium EDTA and Blue 1 (CI 42090). The fact that there are only 3 not recommended and NO to be avoided ingredients is really good as formulas tend to have more than this.

Hexylene Glycol is a solvent, surfactant, emulsifying and skin conditioning agent that can cause allergies and kill skin friendly bacteria. Disodium EDTA is a chelating and viscosity controlling agent that is irrelevant to the environment and Blue 1 can cause allergies. Note- Blue 1 is added to give the moisturiser the blue look. 

The Tarte Drink of Water Moisturiser has a good formula. The majority of ingredients are beneficial and there are WAY more good ingredients than bad. There are 5 highly recommended ingredients, a bunch of recommended ingredients and no to be avoided ingredients, which is really good. The formula contains essential oils, antioxidants, moisturising, emollient, skin protecting and skin conditioning ingredients, along with soothing and antiseptic ingredients, which all have a variety of amazing benefits for the skin. As I said, all in all, the formula of the moisturiser is really good.

Marketing Analysis

Is This Product Marketed Correctly?

In order to assess the accuracy of Tarte’s Marketing of the moisturiser, I looked up the claims they make about the product and then made up questions that I set out to answer to assess this.

Tarte markets the product by saying…..

“A refreshing, lightweight gel moisturizer to help quench dry, dehydrated skin.

Treat yourself to a tall drink of H2O with this skin-quenching water gel. Powered by hyaluronic acid and tarte’s exclusive Rainforest of the Sea™ antioxidant complex, this cooling gel moisturizer helps restore skin’s natural hydration, while replenishing electrolytes for skin that’s fortified, refreshed and healthier-looking.

Questions I Have After Reading Marketing

What are antioxidant ingredients that Tarte refers to? Do they help the skin defend itself from everyday aggressors and what ingredients contribute to this?

Antioxidants in the Tarte Drink of Water Moisturiser include Tocopheryl, Enteromorpha Compressa Extract and Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil. The essential oils in the formula also have antioxidant properties. These antioxidants can protect against everyday aggressors such as free radicals, thus preventing damage to the skin. Tarte have accurately marketed the use and inclusion of antioxidants in the formula.

What Essential Oils are in the moisturiser? Do these essential oils have benefits??

Lavandula Angustifolia Oil and Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Oil are two essential oils in the formula. Essential Oils have a magnitude of benefits for the skin and contribute to anti-aging. Lavender Oil has cell renewing properties and strong antiseptic properties. It can sooth and calm the skin, as well as treat conditions such as acne and inflammation. Citrus Oil also has antiseptic properties and calms the skin. Tarte have accurately marketed the use of essential oils in the formula. 

Does the moisturiser restore skins natural hydration and what ingredients would contribute to this?

Moisturising chemicals in the formula include Algae Extract, Tocopherol, Sodium Levullinate, Hyaluronic Acid, Cocos Nucifera, Phospholipids, Caprylyl Glycol, Squalene, Glycerin and Butylene Glycol.

All of these ingredients have moisturising properties and smooth and soften the skin. This means that Tarte have accurately marketed the use of hydrating chemicals in the formula.

Does the moisturiser contain ingredients that can contribute to Anti-Aging effects? What are these chemicals? Do they have properties to help boost the appearance of firmness, tone and vitality over time?

Antioxidants can have anti-aging effects by preventing damage by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can contribute to aging and damage to the skin. Antioxidants in the formula include Tocopherol and Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, among more.

Essential Oils also have anti-aging effects and strong antioxidant properties. Lavender Oil and Citrus Oil, both of which are in the formula, can prevent damage to the skin by free radicals and delivers a magnitude of other benefits that help the skin.  This means that Tarte have accurately marketed the anti-aging benefits of these ingredients.

Does the formula contain parabens? What chemical is used as a preservative?

The Tarte Drink of Water Moisturiser does not contain parabens. Instead, Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Benzoate are used to prevent microorganism growth.

The shelf life of the product is only 6 months, which I am not a massive fan of, but this is due to the fact there are not extremely harsh preservative chemicals in the formula. Tarte have accurately marketed the no parabens claim.

All in all, Tarte have accurately marketed the product and there are no false claims that can’t be backed up.

Price Analysis

Is the product priced accurately?

$ 58.00 AUD – $ 43.73 USD

The Tarte Drink of Water Moisturiser formula contains some pretty beneficial ingredients and hardly any not recommended ingredients. Ingredients such as Lavender Oil, Citrus Oil, Tocopherol, Hyaluronic Acid, Algae Extract and Phospholipids, among more, really benefit the skin and have really good characteristics.

The moisturiser feels so soothing on the skin, and has a calming effect. The consistency feels slightly wet on the face, which feels so good when you apply it. The packaging is nice and you get a good amount of product.

All in all, I think the Tarte Drink of Water Moisturiser is priced accurately and I would repurchase.

Overall Thoughts/Conclusion

The Tarte Drink of Water Moisturiser is a gel like moisturiser that soothes and calms the skin. The thick consistency and wet like formula make the skin feel super soft and hydrated.

The formula is really good and contains many beneficial ingredients, and hardly any non beneficial ingredients. There are a magnitude of moisturising, antioxidant, antiseptic and skin smoothing ingredients, along with skin protecting ingredients, anti-aging ingredients and essential oils. The beneficial ingredients in the formula have very pleasent benefits for the skin.

All marketing of the product is accurate, and there have been no false claims included in order to help sell the product. The packaging is also really nice, which isn’t a necessary for skincare but I do love it.

All in all, if I had to use this moisturiser for the rest of my life, I would. I really like it. My favourite part is how much it soothes and calms the skin and it feels so good to apply after a long day. This moisturiser is a winner for me, the only thing that I dislike is the 6 month shelf life, but since moisturiser is used daily, you should use it all before that.
