Milani Cosmetics Amore Liquid Lipstick Review, Swatches in Amore, Sweetheart, Gorgeous, Fling and Fa

Today I am going to be talking about the Milani Amore Liquid Lipsticks. I am going to go over the applicator quality and then swatch 5 shades in the range. I will then provide swatch comparisons and do a chemical analysis explaining the formula. As always, I will link my related posts, companies that stock the liquid lipstick’s and any reference articles I have used to back up my points at the end.

If I end up getting any new shades, I will update this post with them, so if you see it pop up again you know I have added some shades to it.

Applicator Quality

The Applicator Quality in the Milani Amore Liquid Lipstick’s is long and kind of thin with a nice fluffy tip. I really like these applicators and you can precisely apply it without the need for a lip pencil (all of my lip swatches below have been applied with the applicator and not lined beforehand). I prefer not to use a lip liner because usually applicators are good enough to do the job because they can be tilted and used on different angles to apply the product evenly. I love these applicators.

Milani Amore Liquid Lipstick Description/Review

Each Milani Amore Liquid Lipstick comes with of 6 grams (0.21 ounces) product, are made in the USA and have a shelf life of 12 months. They are extremely pigmented and glide onto the lips nicely. They are a tiny bit dry like all liquid lipsticks are but I do find them comfortable and long lasting. The price varies from place to place, but from the official Milani Cosmetics Site they cost $17.95 AUD ($9.00 USD). I am going to go into this in full detail after the swatches in the ‘Price Analysis’ section.

Milani Amore Matte Lip Cream Shades + Swatches (x5)

I am going to go over the shades Fling, Fancy, Sweetheart, Gorgeous and Amore below.

Fling

Fling is a muted lavender shade. Milani Cosmetics describes Fling as a ‘Lavender Mauve ‘ colour. Even though this shade was darker than I initially thought (it is like a dark muted light pink shade), but I absolutely love this color.

Fancy is a hot pink shade. Milani Cosmetics describes Fancy as a ‘Purple Toned Magenta’ colour.

Sweetheart

Milani Liquid Lipstick Swatch Comparisons

I am now going to be talking about the formula of the Milani Amore Liquid Lipstick’s. If you don’t want to read a chemical and price analysis, thanks so much for reading so far and comment below your favourite shade!!

Soooo, Let’s get into it!!

Chemical (Formula) Analysis

The Milani Amore Liquid Lipstick formula is composed of 14 ingredients (not including individual pigments). This means that all shades of the Milani liquid lipstick contain 14 of the same ingredients. Pigment chemicals are then added to each shade and added to a ‘may contain’ list at the end of the formula. For reference and to help you understand more, here is a picture of the Milani Amore Liquid Lipstick ingredient ranking list according to the Cosmetic Analysis Database.

As you can see, when I ran the Milani Liquid Lipstick formula through the Cosmetic Analysis Database, the chemical ‘Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate’ drew my attention straight away because it is ranked as a ‘To Be Avoided/Very Bad’ chemical, which is the worst ranking a chemical can get and are the chemicals you do want to try and avoid. The presence of this chemical brings the whole formula down and it is the only ingredient that I would be worried about. As you can see, most of the other chemicals are either average or good chemicals. Here is a picture of the ranking of Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate according to the Cosmetic Analysis Database.

Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate is ranked as a ‘To Be Avoided/Very Bad’ chemical because it is hormonally active and is thought to be able to change genetic material, which isn’t very good. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate can also cause allergies and skin irritation and is not UV stable.

Upon further research on Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, I found that there are a lot of sources that list the adverse health effects of the chemical and there has been a lot of academic research and experiments done regarding this subject. This helps to back up the claims by the Cosmetic Analysis Database because it means it is not the only database that records the bad characteristics of Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (it is always smart to use multiple sources when conducting research to see if they correlate with each other).

In regards to what the chemical does, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate acts as a UV Absorber and UV Filter agent. When applied to the skin it can absorb, reflect or scatter UV rays. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate is a common ingredient in sunscreen. My question is why is a UV Absorber/Filter agent with adverse health effects the 10th ingredient in a liquid lipstick formula? I could understand if it was a foundation of some type but I can’t say that I have seen this chemical in a liquid lipstick formula so far. I have seen Mica, Iron Oxides and Titanium Dioxide in liquid lipstick formulas that do have sun protecting properties but these chemicals are usually added as pigment chemicals as they have multiple uses.

According to the EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate has been shown to have hormone mimicking effects on lab animals, which has been recorded by scientists who have conducted experiments on the chemical. Some high concerns of Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate include being able to make biochemical or cellular changes and causing endocrine disruptions. Moderate concerns include bio-accumulation and some low concerns of the chemical include organ system toxicity and enhanced skin absorption. I am going to link the article I found on the EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database in the reference section below so you can check it out yourself if you like as it contains much more information than I am going to include in this post (it would get to long otherwise).

In conclusion, I am probably not going to stop wearing the Milani Liquid Lipstick’s due to the presence of this chemical. The thing is, cosmetics are not as safe as you may think, no matter the brand or product. They contain chemicals which can have some adverse effects. Chemicals always have pro’s and con’s no matter what chemical we talk about and this is worth taking into consideration. It’s just like the sun, drinking and smoking. The sun causes cancer but people still sunbake, alcohol can cause so many problems yet people still drink, and smoking cigarettes can cause cancer but people still smoke.

In the same token, cosmetics contain chemicals, but people still wear them. If you want to avoid harsh chemicals that can cause the above effects, you might not want to buy this liquid lipstick, or if you have some health problems that causes you to have to avoid certain ingredients or products, this might not be for you. Can you find a better, more safe formula of liquid lipstick? Yes, you certainly can. However, I do really like the Milani Liquid Lipsticks and I find them to be very pigmented and nice, so the presence of Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate isn’t going to deter me from wearing them. It’s really a personal choice if you want to or not, but it’s important to understand that the Milani Liquid Lipsticks are CERTAINLY not the only cosmetic product that contain a less favourable chemical.

As I said, other than that, I’m really not concerned about any other ingredient in the formula.

Isododecane is the first chemical in the formula which is the ingredient that makes liquid lipsticks matte, waterproof and fully transfer proof (I do have a separate blog explaining the purpose of Isododecane in liquid lipsticks but basically it is the ingredient that makes it possible to create matte liquid lipsticks that do not transfer and is present in almost every liquid lipstick formula as the first and most concentrated ingredient, link to that at end ). The formula is paraben free and Phenoxyethanol is used instead, which contributes to the 12 month shelf life of the product.

Some beneficial ingredients in the formula include Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) which has skin conditioning and antioxidant characteristics such as helping to protect the skin from damage by external factors which has benefits in regards to maintaining the skin in good conditioning which can have anti aging effects, Trimethylsioxysilicate, which is an emollient ingredient that softens and smooths the skin and keeps it in good condition and Caprylyl Glycol which acts as an emollient and humectant ingredient that holds and retains moisture and softens and smooths the skin.

Price Analysis

The Milani Amore Matte Liquid Lipstick’s cost $9.00 USD, and the prices vary for Australian’s (AUD). Some stores such as Crush Cosmetics, the Official Milani AU Site and BeautyBay have different prices. Crush Cosmetics and the Official Milani AU Site are way more expensive than BeautyBay, and way more expensive than the US price for them.

Milani USA Official Price= $9.00 USD

Crush Cosmetics AU= $18.00 AUD Milani AU Official= $17.95 AUD

Discount Beauty Boutique AU= $18.95 AUD BeautyBay= $12.00 AUD

For reference, $9.00 USD converted to AUD is $12.55 AUD

There is a massive difference between the price Milani AU charges and how much BeautyBay charges. $17.95 AUD minus 12.00 AUD equals $5.95, meaning it costs $5.95 more for each liquid lipstick from Milani AU than BeautyBay. This may not seem like much but adds up in the end, especially when you are planning to purchase multiple shades.

This difference in price is most likely due to retailers needing to make a profit on what they sell to keep their company going. Obviously when someone buys product instead of creating their own, they need to mark prices up to make money while getting products at a wholesale price. $9.00 USD converted to AUD is $12.48 AUD which is on par to the price of BeautyBay, so BeautyBay over the AU retailers has an accurate price. I would say that because Beauty Bay is a bigger company than the other companies I mentioned, they can afford to mark prices down in order to get more people buying from them and to beat their competitors (Milani is sold in many retail and wholesale stores, so you can see why BeautyBay has cheaper prices seeing as multiple stores around the world stock and sell the brand).

In summary, if you’re in Australia and wanting to try some Milani Liquid Lipstick’s, go to BeautyBay over the other sites (non-affiliate links to sites below).
